Final Music Video and Evaluation
To film my music video I used the Canon 1300D as it is a DSLR camera which allows me to film in high quality, which is good as my exported version on YouTube can be watched in 1080p, giving my audience a nice clear view.In my statement of intent I said I wanted to use multiple camera angles and I feel as though I really did that. I used plenty of close up shots in order to show emotions or to focus my audiences attention on something specific such as the girl putting on makeup. I used a lot of mid-shots in order to allow the viewer to pick up on the character's movements, as body language is important in conveying emotion and the mid-shots remain close enough to capture that. I also used loads of wide shots in order to show my audience the setting. I then used a few high and low shots in order to give different perspectives and make my video more interesting to look at. In addition to that, I also used many panning shots to create smooth transitions and to add motion into my video, so that not every shot was still and I used a few follow shots in order to make the audience feel as though they are following the couple, which adds a sense of realism. Some of the follow shots were hard to film, due to my equipment restrictions as I only had a tripod, therefore I did my best to make them as steady as possible, I'm proud of how they turned out regardless of my lack of equipment, however some are a little bit shakey, so if I were to do this again I would try to get a stedi-cam to prevent shakiness. In my statement of intent I said I wanted to create a split screen for the present tense clips in order to show both the girl's and boy's perspective on the break up, I kept to this idea as it was the main part of my narrative and I wanted to follow the synopsis I had created earlier on, it was also important for me as I was trying to follow the codes and conventions of a pop music video, therefore the narrative was an important part. I created the split screen while editing in Adobe Premier Pro and I really like how it turned out as it does exactly what I wanted it to do, it's also a slight intertextual link to the original video. I also said I wanted the the lighting to be bright on the flashbacks and dull during the present tense scenes and I stuck to that idea for my final video. Using the editing effects available in Premier Pro I used the Lumetric Colour effect and Colour Balance in order to create a dull, slightly blue toned effect which I added onto all my present tense clips. It took all the colour out of my actors faces and made them appear very grey, I did this to convey sadness. I like how it looked however, if I had more time and experience it could've looked even better, as some of the starting clips look slighly too dark, but it was hard to edit them as they were filmed outside where the sun kept going in and out of clouds, meaning the lighting wasn't consistent. For the flashbacks I used the Lumetric Colour effect to make them more vibrant, to represent the happiness they once had. I like the way it juxtoposes the present tense as it really emphasises their emotions. It was also important for me to incorporate those flashbacks to follow my brief and make the video fun and loving. It was hard to edit some of the indoor clips as they were filmed using an orange toned artificial light as I had no other lighting available, which made them orange toned and slightly grainy, I did my best by turning down the temperature to level out the colours. I kept my editing of the video pretty simple as I wanted it to reflect real life. As part of the editing I also had to trim the music as it was over 3 minutes. I cut out a huge instrumental part and fused together he verses in a way that would make sense and then I also had to trim the ending, where I added a fade out effect so that it didn't just abruptly end. I also kept the diegetic sound at the start of the video to grab the audiences attention. I also made sure I added opening credits, where I used the artists name and logo, linking it to the website and creating recognition for my artist. I added closing credits, where I listed the actors, director, editor and cameraman. I did this in order to make the video look more professional and to make it feel like a short movie, however due to the fact that I was running out of time in the video, the credits go past extremely quickly, so if I were to do this again, I'd make sure I left enough time/space for the closing credits. I also forgot to put my production logo at the end with the closing credits, however once I had noticed it was too late to go back and add it in, so if I were to do this again I'd make sure to include it. I then wanted to add something interesting into my video, so I made the song title appear word by word as it was sung, this is also an intertextual link to the original video as they use the same idea. Then throughout the video I followed Goodwin's theory and made some of the visuals reference the lyrics, just to make it more interesting.
I used teen models in my video in order to reflect my target audience (16-25). I followed my statement of intent by making my male model appear middle class, by dressing him in branded clothes which are expensive, such as his Hugo Boss coat, Timberland boots and Nike joggers, this will therefore appeal to the socio-economic groups of C1/B, just as I had planned for it to. It also juxtoposes the girl who is shown to have more of a working-class background, as she wears plain clothes which are not branded, therefore appealing to E/D socio-economic groups. I think this is good as it will bring a wider audience together, meaning more people will be able to relate to the video. I also think that the use of teen models will allow older people outside of the target audience to relate to the video as it could get them reminiscing about their first hearbreaks/teen relationships. I also feel like the plot of the video follows Blumler and Katz's theory as it will allow the audience to create a personal relationship with the characters as it shows their emotions/heartbreak which is something that's usually private, therefore the audience will feel as though they know the characters and feel more attatched to the video. In my statement of intent I also said I wanted to include stereoypes. I followed McRobbies female stereotype that women are usually seen wearing makeup, as I gave my female actor a small scene just focusing on her makeup and I made her wear a dress to appear more feminine, I also followed Van Zoonen's theory that women are portrayed as weak and emotional as I show the girl dealing with her breakup, however, I contradict both of those stereotypes as for majority of the video I show the girl in casual clothes which could be seen as gender neutral, such as jeans and hoodies and I also show the girl being happy during the relationship. I did this in order to not offend anyone by using over exaggerated stereotypes of girls and to make them all feel included as some girls are more girly and some are referred to as tom boys. I followed my statement of intent again by going against male stereotypes, just like I planned to. I show a more vulnerable side of boys as I show him struggling with the breakup, whereas most boys act like they don't care. This could create more sympathy from the audeince.
Overall, I am very proud of my video. I feel like I followed my statement of intent pretty well and I feel as though I covered the codes and conventions of a pop genre music video correctly.
