Final Music Video and Evaluation

Final Music Video and Evaluation

To film my music video I used the Canon 1300D as it is a DSLR camera which allows me to film in high quality, which is good as my exported version on YouTube can be watched in 1080p, giving my audience a nice clear view.
In my statement of intent I said I wanted to use multiple camera angles and I feel as though I really did that. I used plenty of close up shots in order to show emotions or to focus my audiences attention on something specific such as the girl putting on makeup. I used a lot of mid-shots in order to allow the viewer to pick up on the character's movements, as body language is important in conveying emotion and the mid-shots remain close enough to capture that. I also used loads of wide shots in order to show my audience the setting. I then used a few high and low shots in order to give different perspectives and make my video more interesting to look at. In addition to that, I also used many panning shots to create smooth transitions and to add motion into my video, so that not every shot was still and I used a few follow shots in order to make the audience feel as though they are following the couple, which adds a sense of realism. Some of the follow shots were hard to film, due to my equipment restrictions as I only had a tripod, therefore I did my best to make them as steady as possible, I'm proud of how they turned out regardless of my lack of equipment, however some are a little bit shakey, so if I were to do this again I would try to get a stedi-cam to prevent shakiness. In my statement of intent I said I wanted to create a split screen for the present tense clips in order to show both the girl's and boy's perspective on the break up, I kept to this idea as it was the main part of my narrative and I wanted to follow the synopsis I had created earlier on, it was also important for me as I was trying to follow the codes and conventions of a pop music video, therefore the narrative was an important part. I created the split screen while editing in Adobe Premier Pro and I really like how it turned out as it does exactly what I wanted it to do, it's also a slight intertextual link to the original video. I also said I wanted the the lighting to be bright on the flashbacks and dull during the present tense scenes and I stuck to that idea for my final video. Using the editing effects available in Premier Pro I used the Lumetric Colour effect and Colour Balance in order to create a dull, slightly blue toned effect which I added onto all my present tense clips. It took all the colour out of my actors faces and made them appear very grey, I did this to convey sadness. I like how it looked however, if I had more time and experience it could've looked even better, as some of the starting clips look slighly too dark, but it was hard to edit them as they were filmed outside where the sun kept going in and out of clouds, meaning the lighting wasn't consistent. For the flashbacks I used the Lumetric Colour effect to make them more vibrant, to represent the happiness they once had. I like the way it juxtoposes the present tense as it really emphasises their emotions. It was also important for me to incorporate those flashbacks to follow my brief and make the video fun and loving. It was hard to edit some of the indoor clips as they were filmed using an orange toned artificial light as I had no other lighting available, which made them orange toned and slightly grainy, I did my best by turning down the temperature to level out the colours. I kept my editing of the video pretty simple as I wanted it to reflect real life. As part of the editing I also had to trim the music as it was over 3 minutes. I cut out a huge instrumental part and fused together he verses in a way that would make sense and then I also had to trim the ending, where I added a fade out effect so that it didn't just abruptly end. I also kept the diegetic sound at the start of the video to grab the audiences attention. I also made sure I added opening credits, where I used the artists name and logo, linking it to the website and creating recognition for my artist. I added closing credits, where I listed the actors, director, editor and cameraman. I did this in order to make the video look more professional and to make it feel like a short movie, however due to the fact that I was running out of time in the video, the credits go past extremely quickly, so if I were to do this again, I'd make sure I left enough time/space for the closing credits. I also forgot to put my production logo at the end with the closing credits, however once I had noticed it was too late to go back and add it in, so if I were to do this again I'd make sure to include it. I then wanted to add something interesting into my video, so I made the song title appear word by word as it was sung, this is also an intertextual link to the original video as they use the same idea. Then throughout the video I followed Goodwin's theory and made some of the visuals reference the lyrics, just to make it more interesting.

I used teen models in my video in order to reflect my target audience (16-25). I followed my statement of intent by making my male model appear middle class, by dressing him in branded clothes which are expensive, such as his Hugo Boss coat, Timberland boots and Nike joggers, this will therefore appeal to the socio-economic groups of C1/B, just as I had planned for it to. It also juxtoposes the girl who is shown to have more of a working-class background, as she wears plain clothes which are not branded, therefore appealing to E/D socio-economic groups. I think this is good as it will bring a wider audience together, meaning more people will be able to relate to the video. I also think that the use of teen models will allow older people outside of the target audience to relate to the video as it could get them reminiscing about their first hearbreaks/teen relationships. I also feel like the plot of the video follows Blumler and Katz's theory as it will allow the audience to create a personal relationship with the characters as it shows their emotions/heartbreak which is something that's usually private, therefore the audience will feel as though they know the characters and feel more attatched to the video. In my statement of intent I also said I wanted to include stereoypes. I followed McRobbies female stereotype that women are usually seen wearing makeup, as I gave my female actor a small scene just focusing on her makeup and I made her wear a dress to appear more feminine, I also followed Van Zoonen's theory that women are portrayed as weak and emotional as I show the girl dealing with her breakup, however, I contradict both of those stereotypes as for majority of the video I show the girl in casual clothes which could be seen as gender neutral, such as jeans and hoodies and I also show the girl being happy during the relationship. I did this in order to not offend anyone by using over exaggerated stereotypes of girls and to make them all feel included as some girls are more girly and some are referred to as tom boys. I followed my statement of intent again by going against male stereotypes, just like I planned to. I show a more vulnerable side of boys as I show him struggling with the breakup, whereas most boys act like they don't care. This could create more sympathy from the audeince.

Overall, I am very proud of my video. I feel like I followed my statement of intent pretty well and I feel as though I covered the codes and conventions of a pop genre music video correctly.

Final Website Design

Final Website Design

My Website: https://nataliachmedia.wixsite.com/lucashart

In order to create my website I used Wix, as I do not have the ability to code one myself. I took inspiration from my website research of Shawn Mendes' web page. I used pale, almost pastel, colours throughout the whole website. In my statement of intent I said I'd use bright colours and although pastel blue and pink aren't vibrant colours they are still light and create brightness, as opposed to dark blue. I chose pastel blue as it symbolises peace, faith and confidence. I then chose pastel pink as it is seen as a feminine colour, which represents romance and sweetness. The two colours create a juxtoposition, the blue is more masculine and radiates confidence, whereas the pink is more feminine and shows sweetness. In my statement of intent I said how I wanted to go against male stereotypes and I think this does it as it shows how my artist, although being a male, who is confident, still has a sweet and more vulnerable side to him. It goes against gender norms as pink is seen as a girls only colour. It's also a direct reference to the music video, representing the girls and boys relationship.
My home page features my artist logo which I had previously created, it matches to the web design as it has the same colours as the background and font as the writing. The logo in the top left corner is a gif, which changes from pink to blue, also matching the websites background.

I had also created an extended version of the logo, which I placed on the home screen with the mini logo under it.

I feel like this will grab peoples attention as it will be one of the first things they see as they enter the website. I decided to create this extended version of the logo as most artists do this and it would also help others recognise my artist. I didn't really change much from my draft here, I kept the san serif font (Lulo Clean) for the first name to draw attention, I also made the letter spacing bigger so that it covered a larger area. Then I used a serif font (Lobster) for the surname as I wanted it to look more fancy. I changed the colour from black to an off-black/dark grey, as the black was too overpowering compared to the pale background. I made both fonts bold in order for them to stand out more as its the first thing the audience will see when entering the home page. I also like the contrast between the black and white font. I really like how this turned out, I think it suits my young target audience. I added the reveal transition onto the logo so that it would reveal itself just as the person clicked onto the website, making it more interesting. The logos also appear in my music video, creating synergy by linking the two products together.

On the home page you will also see the navigation bar. I stuck to the same colour scheme in order to make it match the background. I chose to alternate the colours depending on what part of the page you were on. For example, if you are on the home page, the font will turn pink and the border turns blue. In my statement of intent I said I wanted the page to be easily navigated, so I did this to make it more clear what page you were on so that I didn't confuse my audience. The navigation bar is also pinned to the top of the page so as you scroll down it follows you, I did this as I think it is much easier to press the home button and appear back at the top, rather than to scroll the whole way up.

In my statement of intent I said I wanted to link my artists social media, so I chose to add a social media pannel. I did this as I think it's very important to have one, as most of my target audience would have at least 2/3 of these platforms, meaning they'd be able to follow my artist and support his career, as Jenkins theory states, audeinces create fandoms, which help the artist become more recognisable, therefore social media platforms are important in boosting a artist. As my artist is fictional I didn't create loads of social media platforms for him to link them into my website, I did however link the original song to spotify and I linked the Youtube video, just so that there would be something to click on. If this were a real page I would also create my artist an Instagram, Twitter and Apple music account.

I made my artist an album cover. I am really happy with how this turned out. I think it's really effective and looks real. I created this in photoshop, using a photo of my artist, his logo and the name of the song. I also kept to the colour scheme, so that it would match the vibe of the web design. After I had created it I used a Wix music box and inserted my album cover into it. Then I edited the song name and artist on it and linked the original song, so that when anyone clicks the play button the song will automatically start playing. I also added a price in the top left corner to make it more relaistic looking. I placed it on my home page, as I think it's something everyone should see, as it is a newly released single and the artist would want to promote it.

As you scroll down the first thing that appears is the text 'Latest Video', it also has the reveal animation, so it'll slowly come onto the screen. Then I've placed a white text box in which I put the music video (linking the two products together), I was originally going to replace the box with the video as I was just using it for guide lines, however I really liked the way the video looked inside the box as it frames it and makes it look like you're watching it through a mini TV.In my statement of intent I said I wanted the music video to be on the website, so I included it as eing able to view the video straight from the website makes it more fun.I then added a big letter V in the same off-black colour and placed it just over the corner of the box as a little accent piece. I really like how this looks, I think it justs adds something to the page, it would look too empty without it.

The next thing down is an 'About' page for my artist. I chose to include this section in order to make my artist appear more real, I think it's important for the audience to know something about the artist, it also gives the chance to show how successful my artist is, which is why I included awards he has won. I used the same san serif font as for my logo (Lulo Clean) in order to create consistency throughout the website and once again the font is the same off-black/dark grey colour. In my statement of intent I said I wanted to use images of my artist to make him more recognisable, I didn't end up doing this, as this is the only image of my artist in the whole website. If I were to do this again I'd consider adding a page for images of my artist.

The next thing you see is a tour dates section. I added this as almost every single musician has this on their website, so to make it look more realistic I added some for mine. I once again incorporated a big letter to act as an accent on the page so that it didn't look empty, it's also just become part of the theme for my website. Instead of using the same off-black colour I decided to use the white instead, to tie in the white colour from the logo. However, just white looked to plain so I added a black stroke around it. I still used the same san serif font (Lulo Clean). I created the ticket buttons in a way so that whenever you hover over it, it the font turns black, this just helps the audience know what they are clicking on. I used the same pink colour as the back ground and navigation bar, to create consistancy within my colour scheme. I'm not sure how much I like this section of my website, it seems a bit plain/empty, I think that if I had more time I would've experimented more and added maybe some coloured boxes, or I would've organised it differently.
The last thing at the bottom of my page is a newsletter section. Through my website research I found that most musicians offer these newsletters so that dedicated fans can get first hand updates on new music, tour and any other information about the artist. I think this is important as it lets fans engage with the artist. To create this I chose an already existing design and modified it to fit my website. I changed the 'Get Updates' title to the same Lulo Clean font for consistency, however I did make the 'full name' and 'email' font slightly different so that the audience knew it was meant to be replaced with their details. I gave each text box a pink shadow to match the previous pages of my website. I then changed the angle of it to 45 degrees in order for the text box's original black border to overlap the shadow and text box making it look 3D. I really like how this turned out as I think it's very eyecatching. I also kept that same off-black colour for consistancy, as well as the big letter N as an accent.

I added a footer to the bottom of the page and I put my production logo onto it as well as the Sony logo as the brief says the artist is signed to a Sony recording label.

In the brief it also said we had to create an additional page, so I chose to create a merchandise page. I created all these pieces of merchandise by myself in photoshop. I used my album cover and two logos as the main focus of my merch, placing them on hats, tops and hoodies. For the hats I chose pastel colours as it reflects the websites theme and I just made the tops and hoodies white in order for the logo and album cover to stand out more. I am extremely proud of this section of the website as I think it looks like a professional merch store. I also did my research on typical merchandise prices, therefore making my prices realistic. I think this part of the website is very important as it allows the audience to join the fandom and support the artist by buying his products, it will also help promote the artist as people who buy his merch and wear it act as free advertisment. I also think it fits my target audience as its fun, fresh and young looking.

Overall, I feel like my website looks pretty good and meets the briefs requirements as it is suitable for my young 16-25 audience and it promotes not only the artist but the music video, linking the two products together.

First Draft of Music Video and Evaluation

First Draft of Music Video and Evaluation

This is the first draft of my music video. I filmed all my clips on my Canon 1300D in order to ensure that the quality was good enough to be exported onto YouTube. For my draft I was still learning how to put clips together. I learnt how to create a split screen effect for my present tense clips, in which the couple is broken up. I really liked this idea as it would allow me to show both actors side by side, giving me the opportunity to fit more footage into a 3 minute video. I then learnt how to insert clips to create the sequence of my video and I played around with cropping them until I was happy with how they looked. I started by putting my video together in a chronological order and then when the first verse comes on I change it to a flashback of when they were a happy couple, showing how they're both reminiscing the old times. Every time the chorus was sung I wanted the video to go back to the split screen to reflect the lyrics of 'we don't talk anymore', which is why my draft is full of black screens during the chorus as I hadn't got round to filming the remaining parts to fill those gaps, I wasn't sure that the split screen would work so I only filmed a few clips to put together as a tester. For my final video I will fill those gaps with more split screen clips of the couple during their breakup. In this draft there's a close up shot of the male actor walking, I'm thinking about re-filming that shot as it is extremely shaky, I tried using the stabiliser effect on Premier Pro, however that made it even worse looking so I took it off and left the original clip. For my final video I will either re-film it or replace it with a completely different shot. The draft also ends on a scene of the couple getting ready, so for my final video I'd need to ensure that I have an appropriate outro with closing credits. My draft doesn't contain any effects or editing, however for my final video I will defiantly include some sort of effects. I want the split screen scenes to be either black and white or to be a sad blue tone which would give the video a cinematic feel. I then want the flashback scenes to be bright and vibrant to create a juxtaposition between the present tense and the happy flashbacks. Also, during a section of the song there's an instrumental part, which I will need to crop in order to shorten the length of my video down to 3 minutes, so for my final I will have to play around with the audio in order to crop it in a way which won't make the song sound weird.

My final story board has slightly changed from my draft as my idea slightly developed. This will be the story board I stick to in order to film my video.

Timed Analysis

Timed Analysis:

We Don't Talk Anymore by Charlie Puth and Selena Gomez:

0:01
The video is opened on a split screen of two different wide shots, of a city sky line. This allows the audience to get a good idea of where the video is located. It may also leave the audience wondering why there are two screens. There's also a black border around the video making it look more movie like, although this is just done in order to fit both screens into one.

0:04-0:05
In this second long clip, bold white writing appears showing the title of the song which is "We Don't Talk Anymore". Each word appears on screen just as it is sung and in rhythm with the music. Behind the writing there are two different bedroom backgrounds being shown, this still keeps the audience waiting to find out why there's two screens and who the bedrooms belong to.

0:08
This shot finally shows the audience who is on each side of the screen, showing the audience the actors for the first time. It is also a wide shot which allows us to see the characters room fully. Due to the natural light coming in we can tell it is early morning, this makes the scene have a cool blue tone with a small amount of sun light coming in from the back, brightening the shot.

0:11
This is the first close up of the characters. It looks as though they are quite upset, the cool blue tones could reflect this. The lyrics played at this point are 'we don't talk anymore' which are a direct reference to the visuals. It also tells the audience that the split screen is a literal reference to the divide between the two characters.

0:17-0:23
This shows a mid shot of the males side of the screen where he is on his phone, the girls side of the screen then shows a close up of her phone where her contact name is Charlie, telling the audience that she is texting the artist. The close up also allows the audience to read the texts between the couple. It shows how the boy has been ignoring the girl, indicating to the audience that they are broken up. The shot then changes to two close ups of both the girl and boys phone. It shows them both going to text each other and deleting it, the lyrics 'we don't talk anymore'  are played again, which is ironic as they both want to talk to each other.

0:37-0:40
For this tracking shot a dolly was probably used as the camera follows both the actors, from behind, as they walk. It moves with them creating subtle jolts, which give it a more natural feel as it resembles them walking. The boy's side of the screen is at a low angle showing his feet, whereas the girl's is more eye-level. The camera is then flipped just as the next move is made, creating a smooth transition into the next shot which is eye-level for the boy, as he continues walking and a low angle for the girl as she runs down the stairs, making the audience look up at her.

0:43
There is a panning shot of the scenery, which breaks up the video. It shows the audience the location change, showing how the video is in chronological order, flowing as the day goes by.

0:44-0:45
This clip is a close up of the actors feet, a tracking shot is used in order to follow them as they walk, it makes the image unsteady, giving the audience the sense of walking with them. This technique gives the music video a sense of movement and helps it flow. The editing also makes it look as though the actors are walking together as the legs alternate with each step.

0:48
The use of tracking shots is continued as the camera moves into a mid shot at eye-level, filiming the actors from behind as they walk. This gives the audience a sense of motion as the camera bops up and down with each step they take.

0:53-0:56
The camera flips round into a mid shot which is facing the actors at eye-level. This just allows the audience to pay attention to details such as costume, as in this shot both the characters are wearing similar sunglasses.

0:58-1:01
This is a wide shot which gives the audience a better idea of the surroundings and location in which the video is being taken.

1:02-1:03
This is a close up of a camera, which flashes. The same thing happens on both sides of the split screen, it shows both actors doing similar things.

1:37
This is a close up of both the actors hands, the boys side is a close up of his hands playing the piano, whereas the girls side is her holding another boys hand. This may show how the girl is moving on from her breakup, following the music videos narrative.

1:57
This is a close up of both the actors faces. This allows the audience to see more of their emotions. It shows them both looking sad. The colour of the shot is also slightly blue toned, which adds to the sadness of the scene.

2:16-2:17
This shows a mid shot of the girl, who is sitting alone on some steps and looking at her phone, her face is lit up by the light from her phone and she appears slightly sad, the camera then zooms into her face and shows her wiping tears. This could make the audeince feel sorry for her.

2:20
This is a party scene. It is lit with artificial lighting/coloured led lights and filled with extras to fill out the scene. It is a huge juxtoposition to the previous scenes of the girl and boy being sad, as they are seen being happy and dancing. This suggests that they pretend to be okay.

2:26
This scene is a mid shot which focuses on the actors new possible love interests and shows both the actors extremely happy.

2:49-2:55
This is a mid shot of both the actors, they are shown kissing their new love interests. The scene is dark and you can just see the silhouettes of the actors with the led lights blurred in the background, geting rid of any distractions. The camera begins to pan round them in a circular motion and then the camera zooms into just the actors and fuses them together to make it look like they're kissing each other instead of the new love interests. This could suggest that although they're kissing someone else they are still thinking of each other.

3:12
This shows them back at home. There's a close up into the actors phones and shows them both looking at photos from their relationship, showing how they still aren't over each other.

3:16-3:18
This is a montage of old photos of the couple, this gives the audience an insight into what their relationship looked like and creates a flashback moment.

3:22
This is an extreme close up of the actors phones. It shows them both going to send a text to each other.

3:38
This is the last scene. It shows both actors turning of their phones and truning around in their bed to sleep and the video fades into darkness.

Synopsis of the Main Idea

Synopsis of the Main Idea

Synopsis:

This music video will tell the story of a couple who has broken up. It shows them being sad
and not over each other as they constantly look back on old photos and messages, yet
they’re too scared to text each other, which is ironic as they both really want each other, this
would relate back to the lyrics and song title ‘we don’t talk anymore’. Despite them missing
each other, they choose to try and get over the break up, as they try to get rid of
memories. The video will contain flashbacks during the verses, which will be bright and
vibrant, as they will show the happiness they had during the good parts of their
relationship, such as long walks in the park or movie nights in. However, during the chorus
the video will become dull coloured and blue toned, to represent sadness, and the screen
will split to show both the girl's and boy's perspective. The video will contain Barthes’ action
code as it only shows the couples happy moments in the flashbacks which leaves the
audience wondering why they broke up as that part of the narrative is restricted from their
knowledge. Therefore, it will also oppose Todorov's equilibrium, as there will be no clear,
beginning, middle and end, the video will show the start/middle of their relationship, where
they are happy, as part of the flashbacks, however it won't show the end of it, leaving the
audience unsure of why they broke up, then it'll show the beginning of their heartbreak as
they get rid of memories/photos, not showing how they get over it.

Lyrics

We don't talk anymore
We don't talk anymore
We don't talk anymore

Like we used to do
We don't love anymore
What was all of it for
Ohh, we don't talk anymore
Like we used to do
I just heard you found the one you been looking
You been looking for
I wish I would have known that wasn't me
'Cause even after all this time I still wonder
Why I can't move on
Just the way you did so easily
Don't wanna know
Kinda dress you're wearing tonight
If he's holdin onto you so tight
The way I did before
I overdosed
Should have known your love was a game
Now I can't get you out of my brain
Ohh, it's such a shame
That we don't talk anymore
We don't talk anymore
We don't talk anymore

Like we used to do
We don't love anymore
What was all of it for?
Oh, we don't talk anymore
Like we used to do
Like we used to do
I just hope you're lying next to somebody
Knows how to love you like me
Must be a good reason that you're gone
Every now and then I think you might want me to come show up at your door
But I'm just too afraid that I'll be wrong
Don't wanna know
If you're looking into her eyes
If she's holdin onto you so tight
The way I did before
I overdosed
Should've known your love was a game
Now I can't get you out of my brain
Oh, it's such a shame
We don't talk anymore
(We don't we don't)
We don't talk anymore
(We don't we don't)
We don't talk anymore

Like we used to do
We don't love anymore
(We don't we don't)
What was all of it for?
(We don't we don't)
Oh, we don't talk anymore
Like we used to do
Like we used to do
Don't wanna know
Kinda dress you're wearing tonight
If he's giving it to you just right
The way I did before
I overdosed
Should've known your love was a game
Now I can't get you out of my brain
Oh, it's such a shame
We don't talk anymore
(We don't we don't)
We don't talk anymore
(We don't we don't)
We don't talk anymore
Like we used to do
We don't love anymore
(We don't we don't)
What was all of it for?
(We don't we don't)
Oh, we don't talk anymore
Like we used to do
(We don't talk anymore)
Don't wanna know
Kinda dress you're wearing tonight (Oh)
If he's holding onto you so tight (Oh)
The way I did before
(We don't talk anymore)
I overdosed
Should've known your love was a game (Oh)
Now I can't get you out of my brain (Woah)
Oh, it's such a shame
That we don't talk anymore

Chorus:
'We don't talk anymore' - While the chorus is sung there will be split screen shots where the two actors are seen in separate places, reminiscing their relationship. Some scenes will show them looking at old photos and some scenes will show them wanting to text each other. This will reference the lyrics (Goodwin's theory)
'We don't love anymore' - As these words are sung the actors will look sad, which references the lyrics as there's no love there anymore, it will also make the audience sympathetic towards them and following Blumler and Katz's theory it may create a personal relationship with the audeince as they will feel as though they know the characters more.

Verses:
'Every now and then I think you might want me to come show up at your door' - For this scene I will make the boy walk up to the girl's door with flowers in his hands, in order to make a direct reference to the lyrics (Goodwin's theory)
'Don't wanna know, Kinda dress you're wearing tonight' - For this scene I will once again be directly referencing the lyrics, as I will show the girl asking the boy to help her choose a dress for their night out.
'Cause even after all this time I still wonder, why I can't move on' - As this is sung the scene shown will be a flashback to when they were a couple, creating a direct reference to the lyrics as it shows how he is still thinking about her. This could create a personal relationship with the audeince (Blumler and Katz) as it lets the audeince into the characters brain, showing what he is feeling and thinking, which makes the audeince feel as though they know him on a personal level.
'Should've known your love was a game' - As this is sung there will be a flashback scene of the couple happily together, this will be a direct juxtoposition to the lyrics sung. The scene will be happy, following Hebdiges theory that teens are fun, whereas the lyrics will present them as trouble, due to the reference of love as a 'game'.

Reason for casting: I chose Elliott as he is a white male which is typically the stereotype for male pop singers. He's also within the age range of my target audience (16-25) as he's 18 years old, therefore my my audience is more likely to relate to him.

Name: Laura Tavares
Age: 19
Gender: Female
Ethnicity: Portuguese (Latino)
Reason for casting: I chose Laura because   she has a latino background as she is from Portugal, which allows me to incorporate a different ethnicities into my video, making it slightly more diverse. She also fits into my target audience as she's 19, which allows my audience to relate to her more.

Risk Assessment

Risk Assessment

Risks:

Tripping/Knocking over the tripod: This is my main risk as I will be using a tripod for all parts of filming. Knocking it over could result in damaging the tripod and camera and tripping over it could result in physical pain. In order to prevent this i will make sure myself as the director and anybody involved in the music video will be fully aware of where the tripod is located at all times. I'd also make sure no one was running around in the area that I'm filming in.
Paper cuts: When handling small photos it could result in paper cuts if not careful, so I'm going to make sure my actor doesn't rush with them. I'll also provide plasters on set in case anyone cuts themselves.
Lighting: When recording my music video lighting is also a potential risk, as someone could knock over the light or burn themselves. To prevent the light being knocked over i will try to put it in a non-invasive area and I won't allow any disruptive behaviour near it.To prevent the risk of someone burning themself, I won't let anyone close to it, apart from myself as i know how to use it. I'll also turn off the light if it is no longer in use as overheated light bulbs create a fire hazard.
Electrocution: This is also a risk when filming, due to the amount of wires coming off the lighting. I will make sure to keep wires/lighting away from areas that may accidentally get wet and I'll make sure to be careful when plugging/unplugging lighting from the plugs. I will also make sure I have the ability to provide medical care, if anyone was to get electrocuted.
Tripping over outside objects: The public settings in which I filmed in, such as town park will contain objects which I cannot control, such as benches and roads. I'll make sure to make my actors aware of their surroundings to prevent any accidents.
Falling into the pond: I will ensure my actors keep a safe proximity away from the water to prevent falling/slipping in.
Slipping over leaves: I will make sure my actors walk at a safe pace in order to prevent from slipping on wet leaves.
Pricking finger on roses: My actor will be carrying a bouquet or roses, so in order to prevent him from prickling himself I'll make sure the thorns are cut off before filming.
Weather conditions: I will have to check the weather forecast before filming in order to know what the weather will be and although I can't control it I'll have to ensure that if it's cold my actors are wearing suitable clothing to prevent sickness.
Animals: Due to filming in a park I will have to be aware of any wildlife or anyone walking their dog, I will make sure I keep a safe distance away from any animals and in some cases I may stop filming to ensure no animals are harmed.
Public: I will have to be aware of any members of the public and ensure that none of them are hurt or trip over any equipment. I'll also make sure I am out the way of passing people so that I am not an inconvenience. Some people may also not want to be filmed in the background, therefore I will try not to get other people's faces in my video as they have not given permission to be filmed.

Props and Costume

Props and Costume

Props:

Red Roses:

The boy is going to give these to the girl. I am using these to symbolise love. They will be used during the flashback scene.

Popcorn + Bowl:

I will be using this as a prop for the girl and boy to eat from and it will be part of their popcorn fight, which results in a cute couple scene, like something you'd see in films.

Make-Up:

Makeup will be used when the girl is getting ready to go out. Follows female stereotypes of women always wearing makeup.

Rugby Ball:

The boy will be playing/fidgeting with the rugby ball as a distraction. He's playing with it while waiting for a text from the girl. Also shows that he's sporty, following male stereotypes.

Note Pad and Pen:

The girl will be using a note pad and pen to be doing her homework while waiting for the boy to text her. It'll just be a background activity.

Phone:

The phone will be a main prop. The actors will use it to look back on photos of each other. They also use it to try text each other again. It plays a huge role in the video as its a representation of how they don't talk anymore and how they do miss each other.

Photos:

Photos will be used by both the girl and the boy. The girl will be taking them down from her mirror and ripping them and the boy will be taking them out of his frames and ripping them. Both will throw them in the bin, showing their breakup.

Frame:

A frame will be used by the boy to hold his photos in it.

Costume:

Boy:

For the boys main outfit I made him wear a bright red coat. I chose this bright red coat to represent the love between him and the girl while they were together and then he wears it again in the present tense split screen scenes to show how he still loves her. I also chose red as it's bright and he's my main artist so slightly more attention would be given to him as he'd stand out. The coat is also designer, which would appeal more to my middle class audience. I made him wear blue ripped jeans which looked expensive and then designer boots to show how he was of a higher class, this would appeal to my upper middle and middle class just like I wanted it to. Also, the young males from my target audience (16-25) may relate to the actor as they may wear similar clothing.

Girl:

I made the girl wear a plain black coat so that she didn't take too much attention away from the boy who's the main artist, I then paired it with plain blue jeans, a scarf and some plain white trainers. Both actors have a very casual style, however the girl is more plain. Her clothing isn't branded as I wanted her to represent a working class girl, so that some of my audience could relate. It's also just a typical teenage girl outfit, therefore my target audience which is aged 16-25 would be able to relate to her.
