Music Video Editing
Step 1: I started off by editing the split screen sections of my video. To begin I found the mid point which was 1920 and then I placed both the clips in. I used the crop effect to crop excess parts of the shot, which were just necessary and got in the way. I then had to re- position the clips again to make sure they were centred.
Step 2: I begun by editing the split screen scenes of my video. I knew I wanted them to have a sad cinematic feel as these scenes represent the present tense for the characters, as they are sad due to their breakup. Therefore, I used the Lumetric Colour effect, which allowed me to change things such as the brightness, exposure, contrast and many more. Firstly, I changed the temperature to -43 as the original scene was far too warm toned and I needed it to be more cool toned to represent the sadness, however that wasn't enough so I then moved the saturation down to 45. I then changed the highlights to -99 so that all the areas which were too bright were dialled down and then i moved the shadows down to -39 to make them darker. This created a darker and more cool toned image.
Step 3: I
then selected the colour balance effect which allowed me to colour correct the
red, green and blue colours in my video. I turned down the red shadow balance
to further cool down the dark tones of my video, then I turned
down the green shadow to -9, to slightly balance out the tones. I turned up the
blue mid-tones
to
11, so that the video was even cooler. The hint of blue adds a sad effect,
which is what I originally wanted.
Step 4: I then copied the pre-sets I created for the Lumetric Colour and Colour Balance and I pasted them into the other clips which were split screen. For each individual clip I would slightly change the effects to suit the original clip. For example in the clips below I changed the highlights and shadows as the video seemed a bit to dull and i also lowered the temperature even more. So although I used the same pre-sets for every clip, I did make alterations if necessary for individual clips.
Step
5: For
the flashback parts of my video I wanted to make the scenes bright and happy
looking, as
the flashbacks are meant to represent the happiness they once had
in their relationship. So I used
the Lumetric Colour effect again, but this time I used it to create more
brightness. Firstly, I turned the highlights down to -40.3 as the video was
over exposed and parts of the sky were far too bright. This made my video more realistic looking.
Step 6: For the rest of my video I carried on using the Lumetric Colour Effect, I copied and pasted the pre-set which i made (highlights -40.3) and then i changed it depending on the scene. For the shot below I turned the highlights all the way down to -115.3 as the shot was extremely over exposed, especially the sky, so by turning the highlights down I managed to make the scene more realistic looking. However, some parts still seemed too dark so I turned the shadows up to 14.4 to balance out the scene. I also turned the vibrance up to 20.4 as the shot seemed too dull, so by turning the brightness up I made the scene look more vivid and happy.
For the shot below I once again copied the pre-set and then I made the appropriate alterations. I turned the highlights down to -73.3 as the shot was really bright in certain places, so turning down the highlights allowed me to darken the scene in the over exposed areas. I then turned the shadows up to 38.4 as a few areas of the clip had too many dark shadows, so by turning the shadows up I balanced the shot out with its highlights.
Step 7: I filmed a few clips inside during the evening time, so I had to rely on artificial lighting, which made some of my shots appear grainy, dark and orange looking. Therefore, with the use of the Lumetric Colour Effect I turned down the temperature of those clips to -35. This got rid of the orange tone in the video and made it more neutral looking, which is what I wanted as it's more of a representation of real life, as my actors no longer looked orange, it also made the video look less grainy. I then altered the shadows and highlights to further make the scene look more realistic.
Step 8: For the opening of my video I wanted to add the lyrics and the title of the song. I wanted the words to appear just as they were sung, so I created 4 different text boxes. In the first one I placed the first word ('we') and I played around with the font, size and position until I was finally happy with it, I then copied it over into my second text box, added the next word and then repeated this till I had the full sentence 'We Don't Talk Anymore'. I then put them into my sequence and cropped the lengths so that they appeared exactly as the words were said.
Step 9: The last thing I did was put in my closing credits. I added another text box and then played around with the motion keys in order to make the credits roll down from the top.
