Preliminary Task

Preliminary Task

We were given the song Unfinished Sympathy and then put into groups in order to do this preliminary task. We chose to do the last half of the song starting at 2:30. We assigned each others roles, allowing us to have a cameraman, a director, an actor and background actors. As a group we also planned the shots we wanted to achieve, by creating a story board, as we wanted to recreate the original video. We chose to film in our local town centre as it's urban and enabled us to get members of the public in the background, just like in the original music video.

We used a Nikon D3500 camera with an iso of 200, as this allows the camera to have a higher sensitivity, reducing blurring. We only used a filming dolly in order to smoothly move along the street, however in places where the pavement was more lumpy/ covered in gravel the video came out very shaky, due to a lack of resource, such as a steadicam, we could not avoid having some unsteady shots, I then tried to edit them in premiere pro by using the stabiliser effect however this did not work and I chose to remove it. We experimented with different camera angles and shots. We used wide shots for scenery, mid shots of the actor walking and extreme close ups of the actors face and feet. I used Adobe Premiere Pro to edit the entire video, I first chose the clips which I wanted one by one and trimmed them down to the length I wanted. I then started arranging them in the correct order, showing the actor moving, creating a smooth flowing video. However, due to it being our first time filming some shots don't match up as well as we hoped, to try and fix this I added transitions to blur the parts where the two clips were meant to line up. I like some of the transitions as they helped the video flow, however I didn't add transitions to each clip as it looked slightly childish. I learnt how to change the speed of clips and I enjoyed playing around with it. I slowed down certain clips for effect, such as when a women walks past us turned back to stare, I also slowed scenery shots down such as cars driving past. I really liked this slow motion effect, I felt like it made my video a bit more interesting. I also learnt how to add effects to my video. I used the lumar curve in order to change the exposure of some of my clips as some of them were a bit dark and others were too light, it was hard for me to match the exposure of all my clips as they were all filmed under very different lighting. When filming next time I will make sure to pay more attention to my lighting in order to make it easier to edit. I then learnt how to add opening and closing credits. I like my opening credits as they go in time with the opening clip of the lift opening, as I gave the text a split transition and for my closing credits I used key frames in order for it to gradually get smaller and disappear. I would like to learn more about key frames and moving text as it could make my video more interesting. Due to my lack of experience with Premiere Pro I did struggle editing my clips, however I am quite proud of this preliminary task, it let me experiment with the different effects and it let me develop skills which will be useful for my final music video.

Once I was happy with my work i exported it to YouTube, making it available to everyone. I had to set the IN and OUT points to tell Premiere Pro where i wanted the rendering to begin and where i want it to end. In order to do this I had to move the play head to where i wanted the rendering to start and press ‘I’ on the keyboard, then move the play head to where I wanted the rendering to end and press ‘O’ on the keyboard. I used Premiere Pro’s “YouTube 1080p HD” preset as I work in 1080p HD.
