Music Video Editing
Music Video Editing
Step 1: I started off by editing the split screen sections of my video. To begin I found the mid point which was 1920 and then I placed both the clips in. I used the crop effect to crop excess parts of the shot, which were just necessary and got in the way. I then had to re- position the clips again to make sure they were centred.
Step 2: I begun by editing the split screen scenes of my video. I knew I wanted them to have a sad cinematic feel as these scenes represent the present tense for the characters, as they are sad due to their breakup. Therefore, I used the Lumetric Colour effect, which allowed me to change things such as the brightness, exposure, contrast and many more. Firstly, I changed the temperature to -43 as the original scene was far too warm toned and I needed it to be more cool toned to represent the sadness, however that wasn't enough so I then moved the saturation down to 45. I then changed the highlights to -99 so that all the areas which were too bright were dialled down and then i moved the shadows down to -39 to make them darker. This created a darker and more cool toned image.
Step 3: I
then selected the colour balance effect which allowed me to colour correct the
red, green and blue colours in my video. I turned down the red shadow balance
to further cool down the dark tones of my video, then I turned
down the green shadow to -9, to slightly balance out the tones. I turned up the
blue mid-tones
to
11, so that the video was even cooler. The hint of blue adds a sad effect,
which is what I originally wanted.
Step 4: I then copied the pre-sets I created for the Lumetric Colour and Colour Balance and I pasted them into the other clips which were split screen. For each individual clip I would slightly change the effects to suit the original clip. For example in the clips below I changed the highlights and shadows as the video seemed a bit to dull and i also lowered the temperature even more. So although I used the same pre-sets for every clip, I did make alterations if necessary for individual clips.
in their relationship. So I used
the Lumetric Colour effect again, but this time I used it to create more
brightness. Firstly, I turned the highlights down to -40.3 as the video was
over exposed and parts of the sky were far too bright. This made my video more realistic looking.
Step 6: For the rest of my video I carried on using the Lumetric Colour Effect, I copied and pasted the pre-set which i made (highlights -40.3) and then i changed it depending on the scene. For the shot below I turned the highlights all the way down to -115.3 as the shot was extremely over exposed, especially the sky, so by turning the highlights down I managed to make the scene more realistic looking. However, some parts still seemed too dark so I turned the shadows up to 14.4 to balance out the scene. I also turned the vibrance up to 20.4 as the shot seemed too dull, so by turning the brightness up I made the scene look more vivid and happy.
For the shot below I once again copied the pre-set and then I made the appropriate alterations. I turned the highlights down to -73.3 as the shot was really bright in certain places, so turning down the highlights allowed me to darken the scene in the over exposed areas. I then turned the shadows up to 38.4 as a few areas of the clip had too many dark shadows, so by turning the shadows up I balanced the shot out with its highlights.
Step 7: I filmed a few clips inside during the evening time, so I had to rely on artificial lighting, which made some of my shots appear grainy, dark and orange looking. Therefore, with the use of the Lumetric Colour Effect I turned down the temperature of those clips to -35. This got rid of the orange tone in the video and made it more neutral looking, which is what I wanted as it's more of a representation of real life, as my actors no longer looked orange, it also made the video look less grainy. I then altered the shadows and highlights to further make the scene look more realistic.
Step 8: For the opening of my video I wanted to add the lyrics and the title of the song. I wanted the words to appear just as they were sung, so I created 4 different text boxes. In the first one I placed the first word ('we') and I played around with the font, size and position until I was finally happy with it, I then copied it over into my second text box, added the next word and then repeated this till I had the full sentence 'We Don't Talk Anymore'. I then put them into my sequence and cropped the lengths so that they appeared exactly as the words were said.
Step 9: The last thing I did was put in my closing credits. I added another text box and then played around with the motion keys in order to make the credits roll down from the top.

Final Music Video and Evaluation
Final Music Video and Evaluation
To film my music video I used the Canon 1300D as it is a DSLR camera which allows me to film in high quality, which is good as my exported version on YouTube can be watched in 1080p, giving my audience a nice clear view.In my statement of intent I said I wanted to use multiple camera angles and I feel as though I really did that. I used plenty of close up shots in order to show emotions or to focus my audiences attention on something specific such as the girl putting on makeup. I used a lot of mid-shots in order to allow the viewer to pick up on the character's movements, as body language is important in conveying emotion and the mid-shots remain close enough to capture that. I also used loads of wide shots in order to show my audience the setting. I then used a few high and low shots in order to give different perspectives and make my video more interesting to look at. In addition to that, I also used many panning shots to create smooth transitions and to add motion into my video, so that not every shot was still and I used a few follow shots in order to make the audience feel as though they are following the couple, which adds a sense of realism. Some of the follow shots were hard to film, due to my equipment restrictions as I only had a tripod, therefore I did my best to make them as steady as possible, I'm proud of how they turned out regardless of my lack of equipment, however some are a little bit shakey, so if I were to do this again I would try to get a stedi-cam to prevent shakiness. In my statement of intent I said I wanted to create a split screen for the present tense clips in order to show both the girl's and boy's perspective on the break up, I kept to this idea as it was the main part of my narrative and I wanted to follow the synopsis I had created earlier on, it was also important for me as I was trying to follow the codes and conventions of a pop music video, therefore the narrative was an important part. I created the split screen while editing in Adobe Premier Pro and I really like how it turned out as it does exactly what I wanted it to do, it's also a slight intertextual link to the original video. I also said I wanted the the lighting to be bright on the flashbacks and dull during the present tense scenes and I stuck to that idea for my final video. Using the editing effects available in Premier Pro I used the Lumetric Colour effect and Colour Balance in order to create a dull, slightly blue toned effect which I added onto all my present tense clips. It took all the colour out of my actors faces and made them appear very grey, I did this to convey sadness. I like how it looked however, if I had more time and experience it could've looked even better, as some of the starting clips look slighly too dark, but it was hard to edit them as they were filmed outside where the sun kept going in and out of clouds, meaning the lighting wasn't consistent. For the flashbacks I used the Lumetric Colour effect to make them more vibrant, to represent the happiness they once had. I like the way it juxtoposes the present tense as it really emphasises their emotions. It was also important for me to incorporate those flashbacks to follow my brief and make the video fun and loving. It was hard to edit some of the indoor clips as they were filmed using an orange toned artificial light as I had no other lighting available, which made them orange toned and slightly grainy, I did my best by turning down the temperature to level out the colours. I kept my editing of the video pretty simple as I wanted it to reflect real life. As part of the editing I also had to trim the music as it was over 3 minutes. I cut out a huge instrumental part and fused together he verses in a way that would make sense and then I also had to trim the ending, where I added a fade out effect so that it didn't just abruptly end. I also kept the diegetic sound at the start of the video to grab the audiences attention. I also made sure I added opening credits, where I used the artists name and logo, linking it to the website and creating recognition for my artist. I added closing credits, where I listed the actors, director, editor and cameraman. I did this in order to make the video look more professional and to make it feel like a short movie, however due to the fact that I was running out of time in the video, the credits go past extremely quickly, so if I were to do this again, I'd make sure I left enough time/space for the closing credits. I also forgot to put my production logo at the end with the closing credits, however once I had noticed it was too late to go back and add it in, so if I were to do this again I'd make sure to include it. I then wanted to add something interesting into my video, so I made the song title appear word by word as it was sung, this is also an intertextual link to the original video as they use the same idea. Then throughout the video I followed Goodwin's theory and made some of the visuals reference the lyrics, just to make it more interesting.
I used teen models in my video in order to reflect my target audience (16-25). I followed my statement of intent by making my male model appear middle class, by dressing him in branded clothes which are expensive, such as his Hugo Boss coat, Timberland boots and Nike joggers, this will therefore appeal to the socio-economic groups of C1/B, just as I had planned for it to. It also juxtoposes the girl who is shown to have more of a working-class background, as she wears plain clothes which are not branded, therefore appealing to E/D socio-economic groups. I think this is good as it will bring a wider audience together, meaning more people will be able to relate to the video. I also think that the use of teen models will allow older people outside of the target audience to relate to the video as it could get them reminiscing about their first hearbreaks/teen relationships. I also feel like the plot of the video follows Blumler and Katz's theory as it will allow the audience to create a personal relationship with the characters as it shows their emotions/heartbreak which is something that's usually private, therefore the audience will feel as though they know the characters and feel more attatched to the video. In my statement of intent I also said I wanted to include stereoypes. I followed McRobbies female stereotype that women are usually seen wearing makeup, as I gave my female actor a small scene just focusing on her makeup and I made her wear a dress to appear more feminine, I also followed Van Zoonen's theory that women are portrayed as weak and emotional as I show the girl dealing with her breakup, however, I contradict both of those stereotypes as for majority of the video I show the girl in casual clothes which could be seen as gender neutral, such as jeans and hoodies and I also show the girl being happy during the relationship. I did this in order to not offend anyone by using over exaggerated stereotypes of girls and to make them all feel included as some girls are more girly and some are referred to as tom boys. I followed my statement of intent again by going against male stereotypes, just like I planned to. I show a more vulnerable side of boys as I show him struggling with the breakup, whereas most boys act like they don't care. This could create more sympathy from the audeince.
Overall, I am very proud of my video. I feel like I followed my statement of intent pretty well and I feel as though I covered the codes and conventions of a pop genre music video correctly.
Final Website Design
Final Website Design
My Website: https://nataliachmedia.wixsite.com/lucashartIn order to create my website I used Wix, as I do not have the ability to code one myself. I took inspiration from my website research of Shawn Mendes' web page. I used pale, almost pastel, colours throughout the whole website. In my statement of intent I said I'd use bright colours and although pastel blue and pink aren't vibrant colours they are still light and create brightness, as opposed to dark blue. I chose pastel blue as it symbolises peace, faith and confidence. I then chose pastel pink as it is seen as a feminine colour, which represents romance and sweetness. The two colours create a juxtoposition, the blue is more masculine and radiates confidence, whereas the pink is more feminine and shows sweetness. In my statement of intent I said how I wanted to go against male stereotypes and I think this does it as it shows how my artist, although being a male, who is confident, still has a sweet and more vulnerable side to him. It goes against gender norms as pink is seen as a girls only colour. It's also a direct reference to the music video, representing the girls and boys relationship.
My home page features my artist logo which I had previously created, it matches to the web design as it has the same colours as the background and font as the writing. The logo in the top left corner is a gif, which changes from pink to blue, also matching the websites background.
I had also created an extended version of the logo, which I placed on the home screen with the mini logo under it.
I feel like this will grab peoples attention as it will be one of the first things they see as they enter the website. I decided to create this extended version of the logo as most artists do this and it would also help others recognise my artist. I didn't really change much from my draft here, I kept the san serif font (Lulo Clean) for the first name to draw attention, I also made the letter spacing bigger so that it covered a larger area. Then I used a serif font (Lobster) for the surname as I wanted it to look more fancy. I changed the colour from black to an off-black/dark grey, as the black was too overpowering compared to the pale background. I made both fonts bold in order for them to stand out more as its the first thing the audience will see when entering the home page. I also like the contrast between the black and white font. I really like how this turned out, I think it suits my young target audience. I added the reveal transition onto the logo so that it would reveal itself just as the person clicked onto the website, making it more interesting. The logos also appear in my music video, creating synergy by linking the two products together.
On the home page you will also see the navigation bar. I stuck to the same colour scheme in order to make it match the background. I chose to alternate the colours depending on what part of the page you were on. For example, if you are on the home page, the font will turn pink and the border turns blue. In my statement of intent I said I wanted the page to be easily navigated, so I did this to make it more clear what page you were on so that I didn't confuse my audience. The navigation bar is also pinned to the top of the page so as you scroll down it follows you, I did this as I think it is much easier to press the home button and appear back at the top, rather than to scroll the whole way up.
As you scroll down the first thing that appears is the text 'Latest Video', it also has the reveal animation, so it'll slowly come onto the screen. Then I've placed a white text box in which I put the music video (linking the two products together), I was originally going to replace the box with the video as I was just using it for guide lines, however I really liked the way the video looked inside the box as it frames it and makes it look like you're watching it through a mini TV.In my statement of intent I said I wanted the music video to be on the website, so I included it as eing able to view the video straight from the website makes it more fun.I then added a big letter V in the same off-black colour and placed it just over the corner of the box as a little accent piece. I really like how this looks, I think it justs adds something to the page, it would look too empty without it.
The next thing down is an 'About' page for my artist. I chose to include this section in order to make my artist appear more real, I think it's important for the audience to know something about the artist, it also gives the chance to show how successful my artist is, which is why I included awards he has won. I used the same san serif font as for my logo (Lulo Clean) in order to create consistency throughout the website and once again the font is the same off-black/dark grey colour. In my statement of intent I said I wanted to use images of my artist to make him more recognisable, I didn't end up doing this, as this is the only image of my artist in the whole website. If I were to do this again I'd consider adding a page for images of my artist.
The next thing you see is a tour dates section. I added this as almost every single musician has this on their website, so to make it look more realistic I added some for mine. I once again incorporated a big letter to act as an accent on the page so that it didn't look empty, it's also just become part of the theme for my website. Instead of using the same off-black colour I decided to use the white instead, to tie in the white colour from the logo. However, just white looked to plain so I added a black stroke around it. I still used the same san serif font (Lulo Clean). I created the ticket buttons in a way so that whenever you hover over it, it the font turns black, this just helps the audience know what they are clicking on. I used the same pink colour as the back ground and navigation bar, to create consistancy within my colour scheme. I'm not sure how much I like this section of my website, it seems a bit plain/empty, I think that if I had more time I would've experimented more and added maybe some coloured boxes, or I would've organised it differently.
The last thing at the bottom of my page is a newsletter section. Through my website research I found that most musicians offer these newsletters so that dedicated fans can get first hand updates on new music, tour and any other information about the artist. I think this is important as it lets fans engage with the artist. To create this I chose an already existing design and modified it to fit my website. I changed the 'Get Updates' title to the same Lulo Clean font for consistency, however I did make the 'full name' and 'email' font slightly different so that the audience knew it was meant to be replaced with their details. I gave each text box a pink shadow to match the previous pages of my website. I then changed the angle of it to 45 degrees in order for the text box's original black border to overlap the shadow and text box making it look 3D. I really like how this turned out as I think it's very eyecatching. I also kept that same off-black colour for consistancy, as well as the big letter N as an accent.
I added a footer to the bottom of the page and I put my production logo onto it as well as the Sony logo as the brief says the artist is signed to a Sony recording label.
In the brief it also said we had to create an additional page, so I chose to create a merchandise page. I created all these pieces of merchandise by myself in photoshop. I used my album cover and two logos as the main focus of my merch, placing them on hats, tops and hoodies. For the hats I chose pastel colours as it reflects the websites theme and I just made the tops and hoodies white in order for the logo and album cover to stand out more. I am extremely proud of this section of the website as I think it looks like a professional merch store. I also did my research on typical merchandise prices, therefore making my prices realistic. I think this part of the website is very important as it allows the audience to join the fandom and support the artist by buying his products, it will also help promote the artist as people who buy his merch and wear it act as free advertisment. I also think it fits my target audience as its fun, fresh and young looking.
Overall, I feel like my website looks pretty good and meets the briefs requirements as it is suitable for my young 16-25 audience and it promotes not only the artist but the music video, linking the two products together.

First Draft of Music Video and Evaluation
First Draft of Music Video and Evaluation
This is the first draft of my music video. I filmed all my clips on my Canon 1300D in order to ensure that the quality was good enough to be exported onto YouTube. For my draft I was still learning how to put clips together. I learnt how to create a split screen effect for my present tense clips, in which the couple is broken up. I really liked this idea as it would allow me to show both actors side by side, giving me the opportunity to fit more footage into a 3 minute video. I then learnt how to insert clips to create the sequence of my video and I played around with cropping them until I was happy with how they looked. I started by putting my video together in a chronological order and then when the first verse comes on I change it to a flashback of when they were a happy couple, showing how they're both reminiscing the old times. Every time the chorus was sung I wanted the video to go back to the split screen to reflect the lyrics of 'we don't talk anymore', which is why my draft is full of black screens during the chorus as I hadn't got round to filming the remaining parts to fill those gaps, I wasn't sure that the split screen would work so I only filmed a few clips to put together as a tester. For my final video I will fill those gaps with more split screen clips of the couple during their breakup. In this draft there's a close up shot of the male actor walking, I'm thinking about re-filming that shot as it is extremely shaky, I tried using the stabiliser effect on Premier Pro, however that made it even worse looking so I took it off and left the original clip. For my final video I will either re-film it or replace it with a completely different shot. The draft also ends on a scene of the couple getting ready, so for my final video I'd need to ensure that I have an appropriate outro with closing credits. My draft doesn't contain any effects or editing, however for my final video I will defiantly include some sort of effects. I want the split screen scenes to be either black and white or to be a sad blue tone which would give the video a cinematic feel. I then want the flashback scenes to be bright and vibrant to create a juxtaposition between the present tense and the happy flashbacks. Also, during a section of the song there's an instrumental part, which I will need to crop in order to shorten the length of my video down to 3 minutes, so for my final I will have to play around with the audio in order to crop it in a way which won't make the song sound weird.
Final Story Board
Final Story Board
My final story board has slightly changed from my draft as my idea slightly developed. This will be the story board I stick to in order to film my video.
